WhatsApp has recently introduced Google Drive backups in its latest update. This allows users to automatically back up their chat messages, shared photos and videos to Google Drive. Before this release, WhatsApp relied on local backups which were tied to your phone. You had to manually rip these backups in order to transfer them to a new device. Thankfully, they have made the process a lot easier. Now you can simply back up to the cloud and restore from it just as easy. As WhatsApp is using a Google service, it is essential you have a Gmail account. If you manage more than one account on your phone, you can choose the account you want to store WhatsApp backups to. Also, there is a timely schedule predefined by WhatsApp, it varies from daily to monthly and everything in between. It is up to you how often you want a backup to be created.
How to Backup and Restore WhatsApp Chat Messages with Google Drive

Backing Up Chat Messages with Google Drive
Step 1 – Open WhatsApp app and go to Settings. You can do so by clicking on the three vertical dots shown top-right of the screen.
Step 2 – Tap on Chats and Calls and then Chat Backup.
Step 3 – Select Google Drive Backup from the following menu. Once you select it, it will ask you for a Google account. Select the one you want to have the backup saved on.
Step 4 – The frequency of backup can be modified as well. Check the one you feel suits you better.
Through these simple steps, you would be able to create a backup of your chat messages and you can include videos as well. Also, you can back up data at any time you like by going to the backup menu and clicking on Back Up Now.
Restoring Chat Messages From Google Drive
Step 1 – Install WhatsApp on your new device. Confirm the number and your name.
Step 2 – Make sure you have your Google account (the one you used to back up chat messages) synced. If not, go to Settings > Users & Accounts > Add new account.
Step 3 – Open WhatsApp app and go to settings. You can do so by clicking on the three vertical dots shown top-right of the screen.
Step 4 – Tap on Chats and Calls and then Chat Backup. It will then search for a local or drive backup, once it does, click on Restore.
